Something else that really stands out on Catch Without Arms is the soaring vocals of lead singer Gavin Hayes. Little touches like dropping in a piano/vocal part that sounds like it was performed through a megaphone on the end of the otherwise guitar-driven title track, or the layering of vocals and electronics on “Zebraskin,” or the loops on “Sang Real” are all impressive and truly add to strong songwriting. And the band manages to shift styles seamlessly, from the U2-flavored opener “Ode To The Sun” to the Britpop stylings of “Bug Eyes” to the beautiful, atmospheric “Zebraskin” to the heavy “Hung Over On A Tuesday.” Wonderful production from Terry Date enhances the mood of the disc.
